Imagine a schoolyard at 3:00 when the bell rings. Two kids meet in the parking lot. One is terrified. The other looks confident - after all he's bigger, stronger, and knows he'll win. His large group of friends are cheering him on.
Kids gather in a circle around them. Some are friends of the smaller, scared boy. Yet they stand there. Do nothing. They watch in horror as their friend is knocked off his feet. The crowd stares as he lay there. The bully wins. The crowd dissipates.
NEW SCENARIO: Now imagine the same two boys meet at 3:00 in the parking lot. One is terrified. The other looks confident - after all he's bigger, stronger, and knows he'll win. His large group of friends are cheering him on.
Kids gather in a circle around them. This time, however, the majority of the kids in the circle belong to an anti-bullying group. They have all pledged to stand up for those who are being bullied. One small friend steps into the circle and stays, "You are worthy of more." He reaches back and tags a friend, who then steps up and says, "You are loved!" That friend reaches and tags another friend who steps up and says, "We are here for you!" Another friend is tagged and steps in, "You have friends here. We care about you."
Soon the circle that was formed is now just around the smaller scared boy. The larger, confident boy can't even see him anymore because of all the support from the crowd. He tries to push through the crowd throwing out derogatory names, but the crowd is too loud and the smaller boy can't hear him. All the smaller boy sees and hears are the kind words these strangers around him are showering him with.
